Teeth cleaning – dental check-up
Teeth cleaning or extraction is a common dental procedure, which is a cornerstone of Preventive Dentistry. Teeth cleaning, if there is no other problem, should be done about once a year.
What is the process?
During the cleaning of the teeth, initially – if it is a new patient – a complete record of the dental history is made and the dentogram is completed (a graph on which the teeth that have been extracted, blocked, have caries or have been treated endodontically or have undergone any dental treatment are filled in act ). If the patient is not visiting the dentist’s office for the first time, the dentogram is simply quickly confirmed and the possible presence of new caries is checked.
Then, the soft tissues of the oral cavity (tongue, cheek, floor of the mouth, palate) and the gums (bleeding, growths, pockets) are checked. If there is a finding, it is recorded in the periodontogram and evaluated.
After finishing the clinical examination and recording any findings, we proceed to cleaning the teeth. Cleaning includes the supragingival removal of plaque or tartar with a special ultrasound device and, where deemed necessary, special hand tools are also used. After all the “visible” stone is removed, the surfaces of the teeth are polished with a special paste.
At the end of this visit, oral hygiene instructions are given (correct use of toothbrush, dental floss, interdental cleaning) and any findings are discussed.
It is worth noting that in patients suffering from gingivitis or periodontitis or from intense plaque deposition, the frequency of teeth cleaning differs from that mentioned above.
How long will it take to complete the cleaning?
The duration of teeth cleaning and polishing is from 20 to 60 minutes and depends on the deposition of microbial plaque and pigments. This time is also increased by approximately 10 minutes if fluoridation is deemed necessary.
Can it be done without any pain?
Teeth cleaning is considered painless by most of our patients. usually the sound of ultrasounds is annoying for some while for some other patients it is indifferent. In any case, if the discomfort the patient will feel is intolerable, we can do a small dose of anesthesia so that you don’t understand anything! Finally, we would like to say that we understand that the fear of the dentist is difficult to overcome, nevertheless at our dental office we know how to help you overcome this fear!
I'm a smoker, should I visit you more often?
If you care about your oral health and keeping your breath at tolerable levels, then YES, you should come to the dentist more often. Smokers have an additional obstacle to overcome, nicotine which yellows and stains your teeth. In addition, if you consume a lot of coffee along with smoking, the accumulation of plaque (stone) is greater compared to a patient who does not smoke.
Does anything change about my regular cleaning during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
YES, some things are a little different. Read on our home page some quick tips and what you should do.
Can special toothpastes and toothpastes replace dental cleaning?
NO, no commercial product can replace the cleaning your dentist will do. if you are diligent about your oral health all that can be done is to come once a year and not more often. Home remedies like baking soda or salt won’t help remove tartar, they may remove some surface pigments but they are likely to burn your gums…so be careful what you read online.
How much does cleaning cost?
The price of any service, let alone dentistry, should not be your only criterion. We believe that price is important as times are tough financially, so we have adjusted our prices so you can get on with restoring your smile, but please understand that dental services are not products with a sale price , but an act that must be treated with due seriousness and diligence even if it is the simplest treatment such as teeth cleaning.
Finally on the subject of price, in the market teeth cleaning is charged from €25 to €70, we understand the confusion this causes you as the range is wide, but each dental office has a different policy. Come to our dental office for a FREE check-up or call us to find out the cost. The reason we don’t put the exact cost of teeth cleaning at our dental office online is simple, our dental association forbids us.
